Old Website Information & Shipmates Lost?

Postby Warren T. Sullivan III » Mon Nov 30, 2009 3:39 pm

As a new member I have some questions about the website.
1. Will the members of the old website be rolled over to this one automatically or will they be lost?
2. Will old entries from the old website be transferred to this website or lost?
3. Can members of this website access the old website?

I saw old shipmates in pictures at the past reunions. These shipmates are not listed on this website. Why?
I read references to articles or blogs about past captains and executive officers, but these aren't to be found on this website.

WHAT IS THE PLANS FOR KEEPING THE INFORMATION GATHERED ON THE OLD WEBSITE

1. Each member from the old site needs to sign back up on this one.

2. Entries will not be rolled to this one. It would have to be done manually by typing it all in. I have all the pictures but am hoping that people just re post them.

3. No. It would cause too much confusion to have access to both sites.

We have been up and running on this version for almost a year now. If someone from the old site uses a bookmark to get to it is redirects them to this version so they can sign up again.

I have a slew of people that have requested accounts and not used their full names when the signed up so those accounts are not activated nor will they be.

I know this may seem harsh but maintenance of the site is a volunteer thing for me and quite frankly no one really seems to want to participate anyway. I had high hops but it seems to me that I get more contact through Facebook.

I now understand this website is a one man operation.
I hope others will use it more.
I have found two old shipmates thanks to the website.
I do want to find more.
You mentioned Facebook. Is there a USS Dale on Facebook?
Anyway, thanks for all you do.

Yes there is a page on Facebook with about 36 members. I linked back to this site on there... it is not something I set up though.

I have just found people by searching Facebook. Seems to work and have hooked back up with a few of my shippies from my time on Dale.

Gonna be bitchy here but,....

Way to support Lee. I have done everything I can to get the information as stable as possible. I have my fingers crossed that we have no more problems but no one can guarantee that something catastrophic will not happen.

I really appreciated the work you did getting the links pages up on the old site! Problem is that the old site broke. I tried to fix it but it was broken bad.

This site will always only be as good as the people who participate on it. If all anyone does is look at it and not post then nothing will ever happen with it. I might as well turn it off and stop spending my money to support it. I have my account set to receive the digest daily and it has been months since there was a post. I get no feedback on the site with what you all want to see except what is above.

The old site was not useful to find anyone because no one had their full name on it. Now you can list people out and see what years they were on. Re doing a few posting operations is worth that capability I think. Also in the photo gallery there are a lot of the old picture that I reclaimed for the site.

This site is for you all. You make it what it is. Now run with it.

Realize a lot has been said but truth is we lost a lot of shipmates and historical info on the DLG when we updated. It's done, it's over and there is not a whole lot that can be done about it now . . . EXCEPT

1 - Try to get the word out to everyone we know that there is a NEW website and it's important they re-register.
2 - Us "older guys", from the DLG days(can we say old farts on the site?) are a little more technically challanged then the "kids" off the CG. It's tougher for us to learn how to navigate, copy and post pictures, etc., So have patience with us.
3 - Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, Google, and all them new "techno" things coming out are all commercial sites controled by someone else we do not know and though they may be free today, and fun in some cases, they have their own agenda.
4 - To my knowledge, the agenda of our site is ONLY to get shipmates together at reunions and to collect historical information of interest to us and our children and their childrens children. If we do not do it, the information of our proud heritage will be with our hull and Davey Jones.
5 - I don't think we are running advertising or collecting data for someone else to use.
6 - In the future, when we update the site, and we will because we will have to, let's hope that measures are taken not to lose the info we already have.

Mike - Dennis: Maybe you want to add to this.

The Dale was a Great ship. She served in war and helped keep the peace, she helped protect our kids from drugs and rescued downed pilots and helped others in distress. Whatever she was called to do, she did. To her crew and her allies she was a proud lady. To her enemies, she was a bitch on the 7 seas. Let us be proud of her service and keep her memory alive on this site.
